I-Rosa L. Parks/Whitney M. Young Jr. Summer Institute- Students who have completed the Intercede Scholars Program qualify to participate in the Summer Institutes. For six weeks during each summer since 1991, the Civic League has conducted the Rosa L. Parks/Whitney M. Young Jr. Summer Institutes with the support of the New Brunswick Board of Education and Johnson and Johnson, along with collaboration with Rutgers University and the Hub Teen Center. The program's goals are twofold: to equip students to achieve more success in their school work, and to better prepare them for the transition from high school to college.

2007 Summer Institute I graduates: Takieya Andrews, Jordan Claudio, Samad Dukes, Christopher Martinez, Jasmin Pringle, Gustavo Sandoval, Nigel Scott, Darion Smiley, Dondre Smiley, KiaEra Williams
Each graduate of the Whitney M. Young Jr./Rosa L. Parks Summer Institutes was responsible for the following to be considered for graduation:
- Required to maintain a punctual and absence-free attendance during the twenty-nine (29) day program-three (3) unexcused absences and/or lateness are grounds for termination
- Required to attend all educational and training activities outlined in the program’s curricula

- Required to attend Upward Bound morning classroom sessions four (4) days a week during
the six week program held at Rutgers University
- Required to take a pre/post “mock” SAT assessment exam.
The Upward Bound program has offered its program to students from high schools in New Brunswick, Perth Amboy, and Plainfield in an effort to identify, challenge, motivate, and educate students who will be the first generation of their families to seek a college education. The League worked closely with the staff of the Rutgers University Upward Bound Program to develop a curriculum to meet the academic needs of the incoming high school freshmen and sophomores. In the morning, all participants met at the New Brunswick Health Sciences Technology High School for classes in Language Arts, which included oral presentations and research papers, as well as daily discussions on assigned novels. In the afternoon, Whitney M. Young, Jr. participants were involved in classes on Livingston College campus at Rutgers University. These courses included Reading Comprehension and Algebra I for the Whitney M. Young, Jr. participants, while Rosa L. Parks I participants attended classes in Chemistry and Astronomy I. After lunch, both programs were involved in lessons on Culture in Society.

"Living in New Jersey" by Jordan Claudio, Summer Institute I
"...Living in New Jersey, the most densely populated state, it is very competitive to get ahead. Out of the 21 counties in New Jersey, I live in Middlesex County. To add more pressure I am the oldest of my 7 siblings and they all look up at me now, that's because I am taller than all of them. If they needed anything like college money or a place to stay, I want to be able to support them. Money has always been an issue in my family. Fortunately, for me there are many good colleges and universities available like Rutgers and Princeton.
There are many surprising things that many New Jerseyans do not know about their own state and what it offers to the country...New Jersey's second largest business is tourism, which surprises many...According to the National Center for Education Statistics, New Jersey ranks first in the U.S. with the highest percentage of high school graduates. Living in New Jersey, I feel, is the best place to get back what you put in." |
